3月26日 Design+Camp Bloghttp://designcamp.wordpress.com/ Design+Camp Blog
I've started a design blog to promote the Design+Camp events in Toronto (under development). 3月14日 College officials guarantee students will finish termThis is what I want to see!
College officials guarantee students will finish term | Last updated Mar 14 2006 09:02 AM EST | Ontario colleges are promising students they won't lose the winter semester as a result of an instructors' strike that has now stretched to eight days. | 3月13日 Billy Bragg + OPSEU??Ummm ok what the F*%$k!
Hey OPSEU sing this one: "I don’t want you to change the world
I’m not looking for a new year, I’m just looking to go back to school" Billy Bragg salutes strikers: The number one issue in Ontario today is the OPSEU college teachers’ strike, British post-punk songster and social activist Billy Bragg told a sell-out crowd at the Opera House in Toronto last night.
“[Faculty] are on the sharp edge and are looking out for us,” he said. “They deserve all our support.
“The audience sang along with ‘There is Power in the Union’ like it was a national anthem,” said concert-goer Damian Wiechula of the OPSEU faculty bargaining team.
www.Establishment.ca Splash Screen & Logohttp://www.establishment.ca My logo and splash screen are up, finally had time due to the strike to finish off what has been 3 years of logo development (drawing scanning & vector editing) add 15 min of GoLive work.
I have some minor changes I want to work with; like the line under the o in Co needs to be shifted down a tad bit (or simply removed) none the less it is in the final 'beta' of design.
My next challenge is finish this home study on Macromedia Studio 8. The vector graphics I developed look washed out when compressed to jpeg or giff (web) formats, Flash seems to be the answer for quality graphics when used properly otherwise it's just a bandwidth pig. 3月7日 What to do in the event of a strike?Check out http://www.cocktaildb.com/ it'll give you a head start.
The rhetoric between the Colleges and OPSEAU is heating up, average length of these strikes is 18-20 days ~ however that was always a fall strike date and students had the spring to make up assignments. We're now 5 weeks away from the end of 2nd semester so a 2-3 week strike is going to screw a LOT of people up.
I love my current teachers and although I support the smaller class sizes putting my life on hold does not increase my empathy.

3月4日 G&T Do The British Isles ShowA flop every year, but in that is the fun! What says Britain more than cheap sterling costume jewellery, molson painted goalie masks and stalls full of absolute junk. After god knows how many 'samples' from the beer tables we squeeked in last in line for Sunita from Corrie.
Purchases: 6 meat pies, a Man City door mat, Fiery Ginger Beer (to go with some rye tonight) 2月26日 DX: Digifest '06 Theme 'Mods'A little late to jump on the bandwagon DX, and dare I say highly unoriginal and over done.
This is a good example of the Canadian arts establishment falling short of the mark, way behind on trends and ideas.
Patty Johnson: Innovators + Ideas HarbourfrontOne of the bright spots (for me at least) of the recent Innovators + Ideas series @ Harbourfront was Patty Johnson and her frank and honest view of the Canadian 'craft' industry. Paul McClure brought much of what he teaches @ George Brown however seeing it in relation to his work was inspiring. My Q: "Where are Canadian production artists falling short" Patty Johnson: "Critical Thinking" (Followed by a lengthily panel debate) I didn't get a chance to thank her @ the presentation however I am most appreciative of her feedback, which I am afraid may have been lost not only on the crowd but some of the panellists. Combined with the Thursday presentation by Renny Ramakers, I'm inspired to introduce some projects to my peers this summer modelling the EU arts experience.
2月24日 Innovators + Ideas: Craft Production Process Panel PresentationInnovators + Ideas: Craft Production Process Panel Presentation- Straight Talk Canadian Style http://www.harbourfrontcentre.com/noflash/visarts/i2.php
Saturday February 25 / 1 pm to 4 pm / Brigantine Room @ Harbourfront Center, Paul McClure (GBC) will be presenting with Van McKenzie (studio jeweler), Patty Johnson (furniture designer) and Jeff Goodman (glass artist) and will “offer practical information and realistic expectations; dispelling preconceived and pejorative notions about production work.”
My first foray into a ‘real world’ presentation on production work, it will be interesting to see how it influences my production work moving forward.
A 2nd event @ Harbourfront to look forward to is: Don Friedlich (USA) lectures Lecture I: His Work April 1 / 10:30 am / Studio Theatre Lecture II: The Technology of Multiples April 1 / 1:00 pm / Studio Theatre T.O. Interior Design Showhttp://www.interiordesignshow.com/2006/ Spending the afternoon @ the trade opening of the T.O. Interior Design Show today, looking forward to some of the design lectures ~ sorry no digi cam. The globe 'style council' seems to be fixated on botanical themes, and bathroom tiles. I think I'll be looking for a bit more... <edit> Well the globe was right, tiles, tiles and more tiles (ala roman bath mosaic work) were HUGE this year followed a close 2nd by wooden designs and the 'Muskoka' cabin look. Interesting to see Canadiana marketed beside some extremely contemporary almost minimalist works. Renny Ranmakers from Droog Design / Netherlands: had an inspiring presentation on young design work being done @ http://www.droogdesign.nl and more importantly she sparked some ideas for collaborative efforts to roll-out within the jewellery/design community here. She has also founded a 2nd company called; chi ha paura... ? http://chihapaura.com/ which is a bit more jewellery-centric, however they share similar design principles. Torbjorn Anderssen from Norway Says http://www.norwaysays.com cancelled his 2pm presentation, and I was a bit too tired to see Jack Lenor Larsen speak ~ bit disappointed about that. |
